Going digital as a metalwork business: one-off jobs and B2B reality

Design, fabrication, installation and long payment terms: the digitalisation plan for metalworkers and locksmiths.

Metalwork means custom, one-off jobs by definition: the railing, the staircase, the canopy each exist exactly once, designed, fabricated, installed. On top of that comes the B2B reality of architects, general contractors and business customers with long payment terms. Together, this makes metalwork the trade where accurate job costing and debt collection move the needle the most.

Quotes with a design component: make the effort visible

Between the enquiry and the quote, metalwork involves real work: taking measurements, designing, thinking through the structural load, working out materials. Two consequences follow:

  1. Cost the design work: it belongs in the line items or the hourly rate, not on a free upfront-work account. For demanding design projects, a paid planning stage can be agreed, as long as it’s communicated up front (the basics).
  2. Filter enquiries: if you fully design every enquiry, you’ll quote yourself poor. A ballpark price for the first round, and a detailed quote only once there’s serious interest, saves weeks a year.

Workshop and installation: job costing decides

As with a joinery: log hours per job, split between fabrication and installation, and assign materials (profiles, sheet metal, coating, bought-in parts). After a quarter, accurate job costing shows what a linear metre of railing really costs in your workshop, including reworking a weld seam and a second site visit because the building wasn’t ready yet. That second site visit, by the way, is a time-and-materials item once it’s logged and reported to the site manager.

B2B payment terms: chase debts actively

60-day payment terms with business customers, general contractor chains on site: metalwork businesses often end up financing everyone else. The countermeasures:

Documentation: welding is a matter of trust

Material certificates, weld test records, acceptance reports, fastening details photographed before cladding: in metalwork, project documentation is part of the product, especially for load-bearing parts. Filed digitally against the job, it’s one click away for warranty questions and authority requests.

Does it pay off?

A metalwork business with eight people gains on three levers: honest job costing (no more repeating loss-making jobs), logged time-and-materials hours and extra site visits, and outstanding debts that are weeks old instead of months. Against that, the cost of the software is rounding noise. What MeisterOffice looks like for metalworkers is shown on the metalwork page; the hourly rate calculator gives you the baseline.
